Stress is the body's way of responding to any kind of demand. It can be caused by both good and bad experiences. When challenged, the body releases the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline to help it respond to the threat. If stress is in response to something emotional and there is no outlet it causes bad effects on body.
Typically people undergoing lot of stress do not realize the problems associated with it, including loss of efficiency and analytical power, ill health, imbalances in work life and many more until a fine day when bell rings as they see somebody troubled or hearing from someone about stress and its consequence.
Slide provided gives more details.
